Humans have always been associated with a body from birth to death. But a former neurosurgeon at the National Health Service (NHS) thinks head transplant plan will change us in the next 10 years.
According to the Daily Mail, Dr. Bruce Mathew, who was a leading scientist at Hull University Hospital, UK, said advances in robotic technology, stem cell transplantation and neurosurgery could help move the department. Brain and spinal cord between two bodies and head transplant plan will change us in the next 10 years.
An 18-hour-long operation once implanted the spine, nerves and blood vessels at Harbin Medical University, China, two years ago.
Dr. Mathew says the idea of a human head transplant isn’t entirely unique to science fiction movies. “If you have a head transplant but still keep the spinal cord connected to the brain, this is not impossible,” Dr. Mathew said.
Describing this method, Dr. Mathew said: “Basically, the experts will remove the spine, take the brain and spinal cord into the new body.” This process has not yet been fully implemented due to technological barriers, but Dr. Mathew believes that the next 10 years will have a breakthrough.
Unimaginable surgery will help people with muscular dystrophy, lost limbs, or even the dead can start a new life with a new body.
The idea of grafting heads has been researched by many experts and doctors in the world. In 2017, Chinese doctor Xiaoping Ren tested the grafted monkey head on a new body. According to reports published in US journal Surgical Neurology International, the transplanted animal is able to walk normally after surgery.
Italian physician Sergio Canavero, currently working with Dr. Ren, is currently working on ways to separate the brain from the spinal cord. Dr. Canavero wanted to try cutting off the brain from the spinal cord with a diamond blade and then chilling in absolute state, before transplanting into a new body.
Two years ago, Canavero announced he would soon make the world’s first human head transplant surgery in China because medical communities in the US and Europe would not allow him to do that. This plan has not been implemented to date.
