Post Office At World's Most Remote Place Looks For New Employees

A post office located in Antarctica is currently looking for new staff to sort tens of thousands of letters and… scrape penguin poo.

If you’re sick of the hustle and bustle of life, then a new job has just been made available for someone wanting to get away from it all. But when we say ‘get away’, we mean really get away.

The world’s most remote post office, located on a tiny island off a peninsula in Antarctica, is looking for three people to join their team during the summer. But be aware: there are some aspects of the job that aren’t really appealing.

Apart from being stuck in literally the middle of nowhere, you’re only given one day off every 14 days at Port Lockroy on Goudier Island.

Current base leader Lucy Dorman said there ‘is nowhere to go when you do get a bit of free time’. Great start.

The main jobs you’ll be doing are sorting tens of thousands of letters by hand, scraping penguin poo off the base and chatting to the guests that come and visit you.

More than 18,000 people come through the tiny island every year and usually give staff letters and postcards to send back to the UK. This is where you would come in.

All the food that you will eat during the stint from November to March next year will arrive at the start of your tenure. There might be a few occasions where a tourist ship will bring some fresh fruit, but apart from that it’s pretty much just tinned and dried foods.

Ms Dorman highlighted another interesting part of the job: “One thing the staff certainly look forward to is a weekly shower. The ships are very generous to us and let it us take it in turns to go on board to wash or do laundry.”

Let’s take stock of that for a second: you get to shower once a week (maybe more if you’re lucky), you get one day off every fortnight (even though there’s nowhere to go) and the main food source comes from cans. Great.

Just to throw in a few more tidbits: the toilet consists of a bucket with a lid, there’s no Wi-Fi and there’s no running water. So, if you’re really keen to say goodbye to all your homely luxuries and get stuck into nature then this is your chance.

They are looking for three people who are mentally and physically fit and want to fill the spots quickly. You can apply here.
